Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming four-day visit to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan is expected to go beyond strengthening bilateral ties and participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. The visit carries important diplomatic expectations linked to the upcoming BRICS Summit, India’s UN Security Council bid and relations with Central Asia

A key focus will be the BRICS Summit scheduled for September, where India is expected to push for greater cooperation among member countries. New Delhi is also looking to address differences involving Iran and the UAE that could affect consensus at the meeting. Modi is expected to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the SCO engagement, providing an opportunity to discuss regional security and the situation around the Strait of Hormuz.
Another major issue is India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2028-29. India and Tajikistan are competing for support from the Asian group, making diplomatic engagement with Tajikistan particularly significant.
The visit is also expected to revive discussions on the long-pending India-Central Asia Summit, which has not been held in person since the planned 2022 meeting was cancelled.
India faces growing competition from China in Central Asia, particularly in trade, investment and connectivity. Modi’s visit therefore represents an effort to strengthen India’s regional engagement while advancing its wider diplomatic priorities.
