Imphal, At least 306 people have been killed and 49 remain missing in Manipur since ethnic violence broke out on May 3, 2023, the state government informed the Assembly. The figures, covering the period up to August 31, highlight the continuing impact of the prolonged conflict.
State Home Minister Govind Konthoujam provided the figures during Question Hour in the ongoing Assembly session. The violence, initially centred on tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, has become more complicated with growing hostilities involving the Naga and Kuki-Zo communities.
The government also reported that 18 Kuki-Zo and 12 Naga civilians have been killed since May this year. Four people have been arrested in connection with the killing of six Naga civilians, while four others have been identified as suspects. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing the case.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said around 36,000 of the estimated 60,000 displaced people have been resettled, while about 24,000 continue to stay in relief camps. The government continues financial assistance to displaced families facing livelihood difficulties.
The Chief Minister said rebuilding trust between communities remains one of the biggest challenges in restoring lasting peace and normalcy in Manipur.
