BSF Personnel Martyred by Stray Bullet Amidst Ethnic Clashes in Manipur’s Ukhrul

UKHRUL, MANIPUR – A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan lost his life on April 10 after being caught in the crossfire between rival village volunteers in the Ukhrul district of Manipur.

The victim, identified as Mithun Mandal of the BSF’s 170 Battalion, was on road opening patrol duty when violence erupted around 4:45 PM. According to official reports, the gunfight broke out between suspected Kuki-Zo volunteers from Mongkot Chepu village and Tangkhul Naga volunteers from Shikibung village.

Constable Mandal was struck in the left shoulder by a stray bullet during the exchange. He was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 6:00 PM. Hospital officials noted that the projectile had caused fatal damage to a vital organ.

Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand expressed deep sorrow over the "unfortunate and tragic" incident. In a formal statement, the Chief Minister honored the West Bengal native for his bravery and service.

"Constable Mandal served the nation with unwavering courage and dedication," Khemchand stated. "His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty will always be remembered with the highest honor. The State Government stands in solidarity with his family."

Law enforcement has registered a formal case and initiated an investigation to track down those responsible for the firing. Security forces across the district remain on high alert to prevent further escalation.

The region has been a flashpoint for tension since February, following a violent confrontation between Tangkhul and Kuki-Zo youths that resulted in the burning of over 50 homes. This latest fatality adds to the mounting toll of the ethnic unrest that has gripped Manipur since May 2023, which has claimed more than 260 lives and displaced tens of thousands.
