IMPHAL/SENAPATI – In a significant move toward administrative outreach and reconciliation, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the hill districts of Senapati and Kangpokpi on Friday. This marks his first official journey through these regions since the ethnic unrest began in May 2023.
The Chief Minister’s visit to Senapati district via Kangpokpi was viewed as a major step in restoring administrative presence in the hills. During his time in Senapati, Singh inaugurated several developmental projects and laid foundation stones for new infrastructure initiatives designed to enhance public services in the region.
High-Level Meeting in Kangpokpi
On his return journey to Imphal, the Chief Minister made a notable stop at Hengbung in Kangpokpi district. He met with independent MLA Haokholet Kipgen at his private residence.
According to official sources, the two leaders held a brief but "constructive and cordial" discussion regarding developmental challenges within the Saitu Assembly Constituency. Singh reportedly assured Kipgen that the state government would examine the concerns raised and provide the necessary support to ensure progress in the area.
Backdrop of Unrest
The Chief Minister’s outreach comes at a delicate time for Manipur. While the government attempts to bridge the gap with hill communities, protests have recently flared up in Imphal West. These demonstrations follow a tragic bomb attack in the Tronglaobi area of Bishnupur district, which resulted in the deaths of two children.
Protesters have expressed frustration over the security situation, calling for greater accountability and more robust measures to protect civilians. Against this backdrop, the Chief Minister’s visit is seen by many as a strategic effort to stabilize the state through direct engagement and administrative visibility.
