Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh has announced that the state police department is considering new policy measures aimed at recognising and supporting sportspersons serving in the force. The announcement was made on October 1 during a felicitation programme held at Manipur Police Headquarters to honour two state athletes who won silver medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.

Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who serves as Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports), and wushu player Naorem Roshibina Devi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sports), were felicitated for their performances at the continental sporting event. Both athletes were presented with cash rewards of Rs 1 lakh each in recognition of their achievements.

Congratulating the two medal winners, DGP Mukesh Singh praised their dedication, discipline and perseverance. He said their performances had brought recognition to Manipur Police, the state and the country. Their achievements, he added, could also inspire young athletes to pursue sporting careers and strive for excellence.

The DGP emphasised the importance of identifying and nurturing sporting talent within the police force. According to the proposed policy direction, outstanding sportspersons among police personnel would receive greater recognition and encouragement, while opportunities could be created to help them continue competing at higher levels.

During the programme, Mirabai Chanu and Roshibina Devi also interacted with police officials and shared experiences from their sporting careers, including the challenges they encountered and their participation in the Asian Games.

The initiative highlights the role of the police department not only in maintaining law and order but also in encouraging personnel involved in competitive sports. The proposed measures could provide greater institutional recognition for athletes serving in the force and encourage emerging talent to combine public service with sporting ambitions.

The felicitation programme therefore marked both recognition of two successful athletes and a broader discussion on strengthening support for sportspersons within Manipur Police.
