The Manipur government has reaffirmed its commitment to adopting a privacy-first approach to digital governance and artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on improving public services while protecting citizens’ data.
The state is increasingly exploring digital technologies to make government services faster, more transparent and accessible. However, officials have stressed that technological progress must be accompanied by strong safeguards for privacy, cybersecurity and responsible use of data.
The government’s approach places citizens at the centre of its digital transformation plans. As AI becomes more widely used in public administration, authorities are looking at ways to ensure that automated systems are implemented responsibly and do not compromise sensitive personal information.
Manipur has already been taking steps towards AI-enabled governance and digital service delivery. The state has worked with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) to build capacity among government officials and promote practical applications of AI in administration.
Digital platforms are also being developed to make government services easier to access. Recent initiatives include online systems for public services, RTI applications and AI-assisted information on government schemes. These platforms are intended to reduce paperwork, improve efficiency and help citizens access services without repeatedly visiting government offices.
The privacy-first approach is particularly significant as government departments increasingly depend on large volumes of digital information. Protecting personal data, preventing unauthorised access and ensuring accountability in AI-driven decisions will remain important challenges.
