The Manipur government is considering redeploying police commandos for highway patrol duties as part of a renewed effort to tackle rising cases of extortion along the state's key national highways. The move comes after transporters warned that they could suspend the movement of fuel and other essential commodities if adequate security is not ensured.
Officials said the proposal is being actively examined following growing concerns over the safety of transporters on National Highway-2 and National Highway-37, the two crucial lifelines connecting Manipur with the rest of the country. Reports of armed groups demanding illegal payments from truck drivers have raised fears of disruptions in the supply of fuel, food, medicines, and other essential goods.
The deployment of Manipur Police commandos, who earlier conducted highway patrols before being reassigned to other security duties, is expected to strengthen security along vulnerable stretches. Authorities believe their return could help deter extortion attempts, improve convoy protection, and restore confidence among transport operators.
Transporters have repeatedly expressed concern over increasing incidents of intimidation despite security escorts accompanying many commercial vehicles. They have urged the government to take immediate and effective action, warning that continued insecurity could force them to halt operations, potentially triggering shortages across the state.
The proposed measure aligns with the government's broader efforts to strengthen anti-extortion operations. In recent weeks, senior police officials have directed district police units to intensify action against extortion networks, particularly along NH-37, while district authorities in Noney have also formed a dedicated Highway Patrol Team comprising police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), NHIDCL officials, and civil administration representatives to ensure safer travel.
Security agencies believe enhanced patrolling, better coordination among enforcement agencies, and stricter action against criminal groups will help secure the highways and ensure uninterrupted movement of essential commodities. The government is expected to take a final decision on redeploying police commandos after consultations with security officials and transport stakeholders.
If implemented, the move would mark another significant step in Manipur's efforts to restore normalcy, protect transport corridors, and prevent further disruption to the state's supply chain.
