In one of the largest anti-drug operations in Mizoram this year, police seized 72.514 kg of suspected methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately ₹58.01 crore in Saitual district. The seizure is the biggest methamphetamine haul ever recorded in the district and marks a major breakthrough in the state's ongoing fight against drug trafficking.

The operation was carried out by a special team of the Saitual District Executive Force (DEF) during a routine vehicle check at Kualmawi in Keifang, about two kilometres from Saitual Police Station. Officers intercepted a truck travelling from Manipur towards Aizawl when they noticed suspicious activity. As police attempted to inspect the vehicle, the truck driver abandoned it and fled into a nearby forest. He remains absconding, and a search operation is underway.

A detailed search of the truck uncovered 61 bundles of methamphetamine tablets hidden inside a specially constructed cavity above the driver's cabin. The banned narcotic, commonly known as Yaba or the "crazy drug," is prohibited under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Authorities estimate the seized consignment's illegal market value at more than ₹58 crore.

Police detained two passengers travelling in the truck—Kaidul Islam Laskar (21) and Rafik Uddin Barbhuiya (32), both residents of Hailakandi district in Assam. Based on preliminary investigations, officers later arrested Vanlallawmi (39) from Bairabi in Kolasib district, who is suspected to be the intended recipient of the drug consignment.

Officials clarified that while the truck was travelling from Manipur, there is no confirmation that the drugs originated there, as the state may have only served as a transit route. A case has been registered at Saitual Police Station under the NDPS Act, and investigators are working to identify other members of the interstate drug trafficking network. The seizure is being seen as a significant success in Mizoram's intensified crackdown on narcotics smuggling across the Northeast.
