Four villagers were killed after unidentified armed men opened fire in Pilong village of Manipur’s Kamjong district on Thursday afternoon, according to police and officials. The incident took place around 4 pm near the Indo-Myanmar border, close to border pillar number 95. Officials said the attackers were suspected to have crossed from the Myanmar side.

The deceased were identified as Phami Jajo, 43, from Kangpat Khullen; Ningthem Kashak, 35, from Zingsui; Betterson Jajo, 50, from Kangpat Khunou; and Vareishim Jajo, 67, from Kangpat Khullen. Police said all four died at the spot. Their bodies were recovered and post-mortem examinations were conducted at Kamjong District Hospital.

Authorities have registered a suo motu case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act. Security agencies are investigating the incident and attempting to establish the identity of those responsible. Hindustan Times reported that unverified reports have suggested possible involvement of the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) faction, though officials have not independently confirmed the claim.

The attack has heightened tensions in Kamjong, a district bordering Myanmar and predominantly inhabited by the Tangkhul Naga community. The incident comes amid continuing tensions between Naga and Kuki communities in parts of Manipur.

Meanwhile, the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) announced a 24-hour emergency shutdown within its jurisdiction. The shutdown began at 7 am on Friday and is scheduled to continue until 7 am Saturday, as the organisation protests the killing of the four civilians.
